Asst. Prof. Dr. Cumhur Aydın

Dear Colleagues, Friends and Visitors,

Department of Civil Engineering, Atilim University’s started accepting students in September 2000 and produced its first graduates in June 2004.

In 2010-2011 academic year, we are celebrating the 10th anniversary of accepting our first students, in other words, the opening of our department. Beginning with the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, our President, and the Dean of Engineering Faculty, I would like to express my sincere thanks on behalf of my department to all who have had a hand in this process. In addition, I would like to gratefully emphasize the contributions of our former President Prof. Günhan Pasamehmetoglu and the Board of Trustees member Dr. Erhan Karaesmen.

In the past 10 years, we have attended 7 graduation ceremonies and graduated nearly 200 students. I would like to mention that one of our first 4 graduates and our first valedictorian Ozggr Yilmazer now has a Ph.D. degree and Ismet Sozenoglu from the same group completed his masters degree in the U.S. and now works there as a senior engineer. We are proud to see that our graduates show successful performance in various areas of the civil engineering sector.

I would like to take this opportunity to gratefully memorialize our Founding Chairman Prof. Dr. Erol Ulug. Following his initiative, Tolga Akis, Ph.D. joined the department as a young Ph.D. student followed by myself. Prof. Dr. Selcuk Soyupak, who later served as the chairman, Yasin Dursun Sarı, Ph.D. and Burcu Gunes, Ph.D. who were the new faculty members joining the department. In September 2007, we welcomed Ayhan Gurbuz, Ph.D, Eray Baran Ph.D and Seda Yesilmen, Ph.D as our new colleagues. Finally, our faculty further expanded with Halit Cenan Mertol, Ph.D and Oguz Gunes, Ph.D. Our departmental faculty profile has been further enriched by the presence of our President Prof. Dr. Abdurrahim Ozgenoglu as a member of the Civil Engineering faculty.

I certainly should not proceed without memorializing the part-time instructors who have contributed to our department. Beginning with Prof. Dr. Ilyas Yılmazer, I respectfully send my regards to Ali Aydın, Ph.D, Orhan Ercan, Ph.D and Bulent Kalaycıoglu, Ph.D. I also thankfully acknowledge the efforts of Mutlu Akdogan, Ph.D, Mustafa Nalcakan, Ph.D, Bulent Oztarhan (M.Sc.), Mustafa Cobanoglu (M.Sc.), Berguzar Ozbahceci, Ph.D, Serdar Korkmaz, Ph.D, Bahadir Yesilmen (M.Sc.) and Musa Yılmaz, Ph.D.

We had very few graduate assistants. Our first graduate assistant Arda Ozgur Kivrak and Caglayan Sert, and Mehmet Engin Ayatar are no longer working in our department. They passed the torch to our graduates Tugba (Demircioğlu) Arsava, Emir Sayit and Ismail Cengiz Yilmaz. Our administrative assistant Gozde Eminoglu, who has served the department for a long time with extraordinary devotion, has her name virtually attached to our department. Finally, the efforts of our laboratory technician Sener Dursunoglu and Eray Ciftci deserve special praises.

During the last 10 years, our faculty members have engaged in numerous research activities, taken part in national and international joint research projects, and served in various consulting projects. They have been sharing the findings of their research studies with the scientific community. A list of these activities can be obtained from our department’s website.

As of the 2010-2011 academic year, Atilim University’s Civil Engineering Department is the second largest department in the university by its 320 students including the ones who are in English Preparatory School. We currently have 70 students in the Preparatory School and 100 freshmen students. Considering the trends in student enrollment, it can be anticipated that the Civil Engineering Department will be by far the largest department in the university in the coming years. It is obvious that we have to increase our research activities and respond more to the scientific needs of the industry. This reminds us to continually review our plans and needs and engage in a more intensive work schedule.

Sincerely,

Cumhur Aydın, Ph.D.,
Former Chairperson of Department of Civil Engineering
