It consists of the design, construction and renovation of various types of structures such as roads, bridges, canals, dams and buildings. The main areas of Civil Engineering are: (a) Structural Engineering, (b) Geotechnical Engineering, (c) Transportation and Bridge Engineering, (d) Construction Materials, (e) Construction Management, and (f) Hydraulic Engineering. There are many advantages of Civil Engineering over other engineering fields. For example, the work of Civil Engineers is visually observable and constructible. Moreover, those who specialize in Civil Engineering engage in collaborative teamwork, see the fruits of their labor almost immediately, and develop strong coordination, cooperation and leadership skills. Civil Engineering is a field where such important talents can be developed, and where theory can be put into practice.

There are many parameters that must be considered in engineering education. They include (a) performance optimization, (b) solving engineering problems through theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience, (c) efficient interdisciplinary work, (d) developing proper drawing techniques, and (e) learning to write reports according to specific guidelines and requirements. Civil Engineering has emerged as a profession that pushes the boundaries of science-related fields by encouraging interdisciplinary skills and collaboration. Consequently, it has also become a leader in deconstructing the limitations of engineering education.

We believe that students must be exposed to hands-on experience and real life situations. What students learn is useless unless they can apply theory to practice, particularly in terms of the assembly and construction of building members. Students should also develop critical thinking, reading, and analytic skills and approach learning proactively. This will allow them to cope with whatever challenges may lie ahead in the professional world. Atilim University’s Civil Engineering Department exemplifies this approach: we offer applied lectures in the strength of materials and reinforced concrete, and our students acquire practical, hands-on experience with structural steel elements by examining connection details and analyzing the capacities of different connection types. In fact, a steel sculpture was installed on our campus specifically for this purpose. The first of its kind in terms of size and detail in Turkey, it is the exact replica of those installed in America's most prestigious universities. The sculpture is incorporated as a case-study in our steel courses, contributing to our students’ ability to engage in three-dimensional thinking.

Atılım University’s Civil Engineering Department offers students a wide-range of advantages. Our faculty members have strong academic backgrounds, active research agendas, and have published articles in prestigious national and international journals. They also serve in various national and international committees, are members of professional societies, and provide consultancy services to well-known construction firms. We are proud of our engaged and energetic faculty members, all of whom have doctoral degrees from top universities in Turkey and the United States. We prioritize strong student-faculty relationships, and are committed to providing the best undergraduate education possible. The language of undergraduate and graduate instruction in our department is English, which allows our students to compete in the global arena and prepares them for the realities of the professional world. The quality of our laboratories is also a very good indication of how much we value experimental work. Moreover, our technical trips, site visits, and seminars by industry experts also ensure that our students receive a well-rounded education.

Atılım University’s Civil Engineering Department also participates in Erasmus, an international student exchange program. Thus, we provide our students with an opportunity to enhance their professional knowledge by studying at distinguished European universities. Our goal with this program is to build our students’ self-confidence, increase their understanding of engineering practices outside of Turkey, and expand their horizons by experiencing other cultures. Furthermore, our department’s curriculum is MÜDEK accredited, and compatible with European curricula (through the Bologna system), facilitating the transition to graduate education anywhere in the world.

We also offer a Master of Science, with or without a thesis. The courses in our Master's program are designed to meet the needs of students pursuing an academic career or working in the public or private sectors. Above all, our MSc program strives to expand students’ technical knowledge, communication skills, and employment potential.

One of our most distinguishing attributes is our commitment to educating undergraduate and graduate students in the ethics of engineering. We strongly believe that ethical principles are a fundamental part of Civil Engineering, and stress the responsibility that Civil Engineers have to society, the environment, and the legal system. We not only inculcate the future engineers of Turkey with scientific knowledge, but we also provide them with the moral and ethical tools they will need to make fully-informed decisions in their careers. We believe that this training will give our students an edge in the real world. Specifically, they will make fewer mistakes in their professional lives, thereby improving the overall quality of engineering in Turkey.
